How I Became an Author from Cynthia Hilston

Since I was 15, I have been writing stories. While it started as fan fiction, I always hoped to be a published author one day. When I was 26, I got the idea to write an original novel. It would be based off my late grandma’s life. I was very close to my grandma when I was growing up. She passed away when I was 15, and I wanted to create a story that honored her life and character. I had primary sources (her diary and things she wrote about growing up) and could talk to my mom. Equipped with my own memories as well, I set out to write that book. For years, however, I was intimidated by the thought of writing a whole novel. I wrote a couple of chapters and let them sit for years before I finally made the promise to myself in 2015 to write that novel. I said I’d write for 15 minutes a day and go from there. Ten months later, I had a first draft! After involving some friends to help with editing, I self-published my first novel, Hannah’s Rainbow, on Amazon in August 2016. Since then, I’ve published five novels and am actively working on more. I’m grateful to be part of two writers’ groups, where we critique each other’s stuff. I’ve made many wonderful friends as the result of deciding to become an author
